Claire Ord and MSP Allan Wilson
Claire Ord, a volunteer with Community Service Volunteers (CSV) in local schools was awarded the prestigious title of 'Best Volunteer in a Supporting Role' by Education Minister Peter Peacock at a ceremony in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.
Local MSP Allan Wilson paid tribute to Claire and all the other volunteers at the awards,
"Claire has come from Nottingham to volunteer in North Ayrshire and together with her fellow volunteers they have provided a dynamic new resource to North Ayrshire Education Department" said Mr Wilson.
"The volunteers role is one of supporting individual pupils struggling in education - often pupils with special needs - and Claire has eveloped strong relationships with teaching staff and shown real initiative, even
setting up a creative writing class"
"Claire and her colleagues deserve this national recognition for their aievement as the invaluable work done by volunteers in our society often goes unrecognised and unrewarded. I am sure all the staff and pupils with whom Caire has come into contact with in her time in North Ayrshire would like to join me in wishing her all the best in her future career" said Mr Wilson.
"Claire Stevens, Director of CSV in Scotland, said: "CSV was the first to pioneer full-time volunteering for young people and forty years on we are still the experts and biggest provider of such opportunities. Young people have long recognised the enormous benefits to be gained by undertaking a sustained period of voluntary service and we are delighted that government is now waking up to the value of it both to volunteers and the communities in which they serve. Thanks to a Scottish Executive grant of nearly £ ½ mllion, CSV will be able to offer even more young people the chance to vunteer, particularly young people who may need extra encouragement and support to get involved because of learning difficulties, rural isolation or other challenges.
